Well it looks like I discovered the oil leak. My oil tank is seeping at the seams. Probably futile but is there a way to seal these?

Nothing lost by trying, plastic welder, or a good old soldering iron. Melt and add material .

Our opaque tanks are all PVC plastic, the black ones are ABS. Common hardware store plumbing cement works, PCV for PVC, ABS for ABS.

Now, anybody have a different bike with injection molded covers, tail section, fairing, they are all,ABS. Use regular fiberglass cloth and ABS cement, stronger than new. My Yamaha RZ500 has a few places on side covers with mounting tabs glued back in place.

Ok Thanks Guys. I'll try the ABS cement and a patch.

I would have thought they were all polyethylene. I'm pretty sure my translucent '72 tank is. If your black one is ABS, you can smear a little cement on it, let it dry, and see if it's extremely stuck, or if it peels off.

Edit: I put some PVC cement on one of my translucent '72 tanks and it didn't stick... I can peel it off in one piece.

What I posted always works, never had a problem, but, what Jim said, try it first to confirm. I've had great luck using the fiberglass cloth and the cements, it always makes a strong bond and has insane strength.

Well, the first attempt was a failure. The ABS/fiberglass mat peeled right off during the test. I am going to attempt again after cleaning.
I used acetone to clean but perhaps just soap and water?

My '73 and 74 both have MDPE which takes a very special cement.

Oil impregnated crack interface will not bond well.

If I were me!!??? I would try a spot heat gun or iron, to chase the crack closed.

cliff

3M Scotch-Weld Plastic & Rubber Instant Adhesive PR40, Clear

all of these glues need surface deactivation via. flame/ ozone/ or special activator.

Probably not very strong on butt joints esp. with oil weighing on the sides and hitting bumps...

Wonder how it split?

The plaque plastic wouldn't be ABS, it would be PVC.
