Living in a state where traffic controls are a mere "suggestion", I welcomed them. The intersection by me was was almost a given to have some sort of T bone weekly. The fact is, if a person is actually paying attention to driving, keeping the required separation difference, there should never be a rearender. Most are because people are trying to run the "orange" in a convoy........

Thats cool, everybody has their own opinion.I also live in a area that has the red light cameras and I hope they get rid of them !!!! The should just come out and say, this is a way to increase revenue for the city and not make it a safety issue !!!! I see it all the time, with the 6 second yellow lights, people slamming on their brakes to the point of almost skidding !!! I think they should increase the yellow lights time before they turn red, buts that just me !!!! I hope I have a chance to vote on this issue in the future because I will vote against it in a second !!!!

I think of it sort of like the lottery. It is a voluntary tax. You don't have to pay it unless you choose to. ;)

Developing a safety/traffic control devise that, at the same time, raises revenue is a good thing. And, it's likely the revenue from these only serves to pay the initial capital cost and subsequent maintance and operations cost.

I would see the need to use a yellow light that flashes for a few seconds before turning red. Also, like in our town the next light to turn green is delayed by a few seconds after the crossing light has turned red.

(Hic ! ) was this what we were talking about.... :(

Oh wait !!!

The article is on Chicago and Rahm Emanuel.....Gezzzz......thats very different. I was referring to an ordinary American city, not one of the most corrupt cities in America. I was married into a Chicago family. They believed that greasing palms was normal business practice.

I agree some cities did use these for revenue. The problem is, it's a civil citation, and if people don't pay they have to be gone after in civil court. Albuquerque dropped them a few years ago, and the city is still owed millions. We got them here in Rio Rancho about the same time they stopped in Albuquerque, and it's the same thing, people not paying.

But a lot of cities are getting old and the costs of running them is horrendous. Both cities here need billions to fix the water systems alone.

To me, the main thing is the safety factor, how do you stop people from running lights? They only pay attention if you hit them in the wallet. I have dealt with them for probably 2 decades, no citations and no accidents. I actually slow down for intersections, really pay attention and tap my brake light so it flashes. As was said, if you drive defensive and just pay attention, it doesn't cost you a dime.......

Here in Northern Nevada, the NDOT state highway engineers all favor traffic circles, DEADLY stupidity.

There is one in Fernley, 50 miles from here, and is the cause of almost every traffic incident in the north part of the state, but, still, they keep insisting on building new ones.

We are about to get a bypass, so we can bypass the City of Fernley to get from the southern part of our county, to Sparks/Reno, and, of course, a traffic circle is planned for the junction of Hwy's 95A and 50. We all have contacted NDOT, and told them NO, but, their engineers are set on making the bypass as deadly as they possibly can.

I have driven through many, many traffic circles, both directional, all over the world, and, all it takes is ONE whacko that does a stupidity in one, to cause massive havoc, and worse.

I agree with those that have voiced that if drivers paid attention, knew and obeyed the rules, then, a lot less problems, accidents would be occurring.
