This is the first four stroke bike I've had since 1969. The owner's manual calls for an interval of about 7000 miles between changes after the first at 600 miles. I use one of the specified oils, a high quality 10w/40 non- synthetic. I'm just surprised that a high powered, high revving bike wouldn't have a shorter interval. I'm probably going to go with a 3000 or 4000 mile interval. I really am clueless about how long oil lasts, though. I know that my 1995 Geo Metro interval is supposed to be 3000 miles, except up to 7000 miles with easy usage.

I would appreciate any advice from anyone with knowledge in this area. Thanks.

If you are using the natural oils, 4,000 miles is literally it. FRAM filters are a giant NO-NO, they come apart at the ends and lose filtering efficiency, and, their filter media is too restrictive, loses oil pressure.

As far as viscosity, 10W-40 is just plain too light for me, and what I have seen when these things come apart from breaking because of too light an oil, nothing less than 20W-50 for me.

At my next oil change (6000 miles) I am switching to Amsoil 10w 40 full synthetic. I plan on using a 5000 mile interval between changes. I hope this is sensible.

on the Ducati 996 oil change is each 6000 miles according to the owner manual, change it each 3000 miles
