Thought I would get some advice on this.

My H1A is running well - I have replaced or rebuilt everything from the gauges to the crank - except the oil pump.
The pump is working fine right now. I have 5000 miles on the bike since rebuild (all stock) but the pump has 25000 miles on it.

What is the life expectancy of an oil pump?

Are there any indicators of a pump going bad?

I did pick one up on ebay as a backup.

Thanks

I would guess, with just fresh clean oil running through it all the time, they would last indefinitely.

One thing you could do is get a feel for how much oil you add to the oil tank, relative to how many tanks for gasoline you use. If you later find that the oil consumption is becoming less, you'll know the pump is getting leaky.

My pump has to have over 40,000 miles on it and I have not noticed anything changing.

What I have read is that when these pumps start to "wear out", they actually begin to pump MORE oil to the cylinders...

You need not worry about "under-oiling", but remember, the more oil, the leaner the mixture, so keep an eye (ear) on that.

My H2B started sucking air from under the bail were the "V" shaped o-ring cuts a groove in the pot metal.....then you start getting air bubbles in the lines.......I think generally people run them for a long time as long as they don't malfunction and you can see oil crawling up the lines when you put the oil lines back on the bike and start it for the first time and WFO the pump

Jim Shreve "Darth" can check them out for you, he has the test equipment........I am converting my H2B to an early 3 line 72/73 system......my pump that will be going on the bike to use looks good, but I am going to send it to Jim to be checked out just in case.

I had JRD do helicoils in the first pump, 5 of them (50 bucks or so)......he does a GREAT job.......I am almost considering having th 72/73 pump helicoiled first
