Howdy, I'm trying to find the closest match to 72 H2 blue as possible. I've seen so many shades of blue on line that I'm not sure what is the true color of blue I need for a restore. I purchased paint on-line from "Vintage paint" a few months back. My painter finished the job but in my opinion it looks to dark. Vintage paint told me to use 3-4 coats of candy blue for the correct shade. I used 3 coats. I have another set getting painted now and going a little lighter this time. I will post pictures later.

Also my Vin is under 800. Did they use different blues during 72??

Thanks

Kaw used several shades of blue.
Remember that base color will effect the final shade.... silver different than white different than grey.

When I used to take them out of the wooden crates and set them up long ago, it was not uncommon to wheel a new H2 out to the showroom after the setup and park it next to one that had been there a few weeks, only to see the colors were indeed different.
Made in Japan man, wht did ya expect. LOL
The real test is if YOU like it.
Im sure your painter also knows, that using different base coats/primers will produce differing shades and even some drastic color differences.
Good luck on your quest, but its all been said and done .
kinda like the "which 2 stroke oil" threads.....

Yes I bought all the paint from "Vintage paint" even the base coat. All the paint necessary to paint the H2. My painter paints high end cars and bikes said he could have matched it without me buying the paint first from out of state. The only good part of buying the paint out of state is here in California the EPA is so strict the paint isn't as good. I'll post pictures of both jobs hopefully next week.

It's all in the eye of the beholder. For me correct is HOK Oriental Candy Blue on a white base. But to each their own. Come to the DG Meet in a couple of weeks and you will see lots of options.

It's not just the H2 Blue, ALL Kawasaki's prior to 1976 varied in shades on a weekly basis, You are correct, the earlier bikes used a blue base coat which produced a darker Blue.

How come so many of the original paint 72 H2's have what looks like a pale blue, not candy in anyway? I'm finishing
up another one this month and it's a dark candy blue and looks great in the sun. Don't much care for the seat and
it will probably be changed to a stock one.

This is the bike for sale in Colorado that has the pale blue that I see the most. I like the dark candy blue way
better. I remember seeing a picture of a bunch of original paint blue 72 tanks lined up, everyone was a different
shade. Paint it to the shade you like.

From Classic Kawasaki;
Kawasaki paintwork can vary by many different shades, there was very little manufacturing consistency in the early 1970's. Decals were fitted to tanks at different angles, and often different decals by different manufacturers were fitted. The colors of body panels would vary by many different shades depending on when the bodywork was made, it was also common practice for the factory to re-spray new tanks to a different color! I have seen for example, an Orange S2a tank that was re-sprayed by the factory to S2a Blue.

Not only were the shades of paint different but also the type of fuel tank was often different. Many fuel tanks from later models were sprayed at the factory for a direct replacement for an earlier model. The Blue 1972 H2 is a prime example.

In 1973 the original supply of H2 tanks was exhausted and the factory then sprayed a batch of tanks from the H2a (with the locking fuel cap) in the 1972 Blue H2 colors, In 1974 if you wished to buy a 1972 Blue h2 tank you would have been sold a 1974 H2b tank but painted in the colors of the 1972 Blue bike. Basically it is possible to have 3 types of Genuine factory petrol tanks with three different types of fuel cap.

There is also One final anomaly, in 1973 the factory produced a batch of fuel tanks (only?) with the similar stripes to the S2a - I can only assume that this was a total mistake by someone, my own theory is that someone in the paint department confused a batch of H2a tanks with a batch of S2a tanks - these tanks were then sold off at a discount - the problem was that as far as I am aware there were never any tail units produced for the H2 with the S2a graphics.

Here is an example of Three New Old Stock H2c petrol tanks and all have different shades of purple:
