We live with seatbelts laws, we can literally "live" with helmet laws.........

I helped trying to save a kid with his head crushed in, people will do stupid things, nothing wrong at all with a helmet law......

John and I don't agree often (it's the girlie bike thing you know :P ) but I agree with John's view on this. I spent many years in emergency services for my city. There is no telling how much we tax payers spend taking care of the squids that don't have safety gear or medical insurance.

The ghost of Mark Twain casts a dubious eye on this NYT message :eh:

Missing a few data points there to support the assertion made. And the only "interactive" thing about it is that I was able to scroll down the page, ooh look the graphs change!

Obviously it's a lot more dangerous to ride without a helmet. Obviously it's more dangerous to ride a bike than drive a car. Obviously I'm no fan of the NYT

The problem with helmet laws is they don't fix the problem.. The problem is: motorcyclists dying from injuries sustained in motorcycle crashes... Looking closer at the data presented, the only thing their data proves is the people providing the data are slanted toward creating headlight laws. For example on one page they say "After the law change in 2000, a huge share of those new deaths were riders without helmets". and looking at the chart it shows that about 500 people died while riding a motorcycle. 200 of them were wearing a helmet and 300 were not. What the chart does not show is how many of those 300 would have been saved had they been wearing a helmet (a helmets does no good for someone who dies of chest injuries)... More important is the fact that 200 motorcyclists were wearing their helmet BUT DIED ANYWAY!

The proper way to keep a motorcyclist (or motorcyclists) from dying in a motorcycle accident is not to make it slightly more likely they will survive an accident. The proper way to keep a motorcyclist (or motorcyclists) from dying in a motorcycle accident is to cut the down the number of motorcycle accidents..

When the raw accident data is examined closely (google "Abate of Illinois Ride Smart" for one example) one of the big factors in motorcycle accidents is poorly trained riders (another is alcohol). Just because a rider is over 40 doesn't mean they are skilled in riding a motorcycle. Even experience driving a car doesn't make you skilled in riding a motorcycle.. In many states no motorcycle training is required for people over a certain age and rider training courses aren't readily available.

IF the money spent trying to force a motorcyclist to wear a helmet were spent on rider education (particularly training) more lives would be saved...

WHAT !!!!
This sh*t again !

Don't like the gov telling what to do........you pay them money every day to tell you what to do !
Doesn't fix the problem !!!

Here we go...Trevor....

Before......

Image

And After not wearing a helmet.....

Image

If he'd been wearing a helmet he might have walked away....or at least not suffered this....

Want to take a look at the grief this has caused his family....for the rest of their lives !
......Nahhhh....it's just too much......

Quit spending my tax dollars because you think you have some right to have wind in your hair. You're on public roads. You want wind in your hair; get off our roads and build your own roads.

I'll vote for a helmet law every time !!!!
