All of my "encounters" with deer have been them running directly into my path. I think that they panic and get tunnel vision in which case there is not much that you can do to avoid contact.
I have had the same thing happen with rabbits and other small animals but it does not cause so much damage. Plus I am not a tree hugger by any means but I still feel bad about killing an animal even if it is by accident.

Get a set of train horns and wire them to be on all the time. ;)

a few years back, my brother was on his way to work and hit a deer....totalling his car.

He then borrowed one of my parents cars and a couple of days later proceeded to hit yet another deer doing a few thousand dollars worth of damage (just shy of totalling it out).

with that car headed to the bodyshop, he called me to ask if he could "borrow" one of my cars?

.... and like any good brother, I told him to pound sand.

a old friend (was 69 H1 owner on the 70s no more on bike now) hit a wild boar with his VW golf years ago : the car was destroyed.
As lawyer has had several files with deer or wild boar crashs with car on which sadly some peoples have been killed.
