Going to a "3" is just an economy move. 4 cylinder performance will always beat a 3......

If there was a ground clearance problem. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Some weight reduction.....and as Dr Moo says, economy. I'd suggest Yamaha see's it as a way to keep the retail price from getting too out of hand. Plenty of savings in removing a single cylinder.
