Good stuff, John, building a 1/48 scale model of an SR-71 as we speak!

when i had my shop out in lancaster ca. i had a customer that told my mechanic that he had been a SR-71 pilot. I told my mechanic that i thought he was full of crap. So we googled the guy. He was not full of crap i found 11 page about this guy on NASA's web site

In the late 70's I was in the USAF stationed at Griffiss AFB. You older guys will remember the hostage situation
with Iran. A day or two before they tried the rescue mission we had a SR71 land to unload the film. I remember
we were on alert and working 12 hour shifts for a week or so. I worked on B52's and KC-135's and never saw a
SR71 land at our base before then. We had the hanger doors open and heard it land and then taxi to the other
side of our building. We walked over to check it out and they already had SP's guarding the hanger and you couldn't
see a thing. A short time later it taxied past us again and took off. God that thing was impressive, jet blast looked
about a 100ft coming out of the engines as it took off. After doing some research I see it wasn't the first time our
base was used for the SR71's

I had no idea about this most fascinating of aircraft.

We had some kick-ass aircraft in the 50's and 60's. The 58 Hustler was my favorite but never got to see one in action
since they only flew them till late 69 early 70.

Did anyone build the B 58 model that had a button on top to drop the drop tank?

I also got to watch a SR-71 land and take off, it was 1978 and I was at Holloman AFB in Alamagordo NM. Awesome jet!

That model is from the '60's and fetches a fair price these days - Monogram also made a 1/48 scale B-58 in the late '80's which is BIG and impressive. (Been riding bikes since '68, and building models since the, err, early '60's....!!

USS Intrepid (aircraft carrier) on permanent display in NYC the deck is loaded with aircraft I think the SR 71 is there , took the family down there awhile back , these high tech planes up close are mere tin cans  not a lot to them very light all engine or engines and the pilot seat talk about a small space these guys could barely move a muscle. took guts to fly those things
