What are some f your thoughts on using bearings sourced from somewhere other than a motorcycle parts store....in other words if you need a bearing that is obsolete and you can source one from an industrial supply store, would you use one? I've used some for crank bearings when I rebuilt my son's little KD80, and they are holding up fine.....

Im wondering because i need one of those crank bearings that has a groove cut in it, the kawasaki 92045-016...I can get them for about $80, there are two on Ebay now...but I had already got a hold of a KYK bearing that was the same, minus the retaining plate groove...I put in on the lathe at work, and made the groove.

The one thing that distresses me? The package says "KYK bearing, Osaka Japan" which is why I bought this one a while back. In small print at the bottom, it says Made in China. I donlt know if I want a Chinese bearing in my KX400. All kidding aside, quality control is a MAJOR problem in China. My Brother, who is a professional auto mechanic has had SO many out of the box failures these last few years, now that even familiar old branded parts are now made in China.

MAybe I should just go the long green for the old Japanese item. Or maybe find a modern bearing that really WAS made in Japan.

EDIT: I found some Nachi's that were actually made in the land of the rising sun...no suprise they are a LITTLE more pricy than the bottom rung junk. Hmmm.

Have you tried this place. They have a easy to use website. I buy a lot of C3 quality bearings from them.

This will be one of the things on my winter list. I broke third gear on it out on the track and while I have it apart Im going to go ahead and give it the proper treatment. It deserves it. I bought it for a song and have had many motos on it without a hitch. It was such a low hour bike when I got it, I could have detailed it and made a couple grand, now she's properly worn.
