I always thought the reason for case reeds was so the rear of the cylinder could be used for transfer ports. Transfer port area is why rotatory valve engines reigned supreme for so long.

I suspect Henry's converted engine is also powerful due to his reed area/flow capacity emulates the quoted modern reed engine(s). As such Henry's large modern flatslide carbs have an excellent signal/velocity for fuel pickup/atomization, even at WOT. Baxter/Laurens also use/have used reeds/reed boxes of sufficient size to replicate the flow characteristics of modern factory reeded engines......

Actually you can get the same transfer port area with reed valves as with a rotary valve. The rotary valve advantage was an unimpeded intake flow path and asymmetrical intake timing.
