Cases looked pretty good after blasting ,satin silver finish, but open pored? After washing and scrubbing, pores were closed but it seemed to stain aluminum, leaving streaks. It was a long time ago when I had these bikes, can't remember exactly how cases looked then, but I do remember they stained and oxidized. What are your thoughts on fine steel wool and WD-40?

+1 to all of Ric's observations
I am recently having splotchy finishes on carb cleaning in my Branson ultrasonic cleaner.
I did leave the first one run for 8 hours so it might just be user error.

Have this really crazy idea that I could actually seal the carbs well enough to bead blast the exterior but there is just too much risk involved in screwing up a 3 decent Mikuni 34's.

I've done it without a problem (using soda ash glass beads).
I did keep the nozzle back away from the part so as not to point it directly up a small hole.
Of course nothing in the history of all mankind ever received the cleaning they got afterwards..... :P

Well I decided to go with vapor blasting after not being satisfied with glass beading and ultrasonic cleaning.Found Brad Arnold at Arnolds Design in Philadelphia, spoke to him on the phone, nice guy, sent cases to him and he turned them around in 1 day, price was great, communication was top shelf,if anyone is considering vapor blasting, give Brad a call.

It looks great! Would you mind posting what parts you had done,
the cost and the shipping. I'm considering having mine done this
way also.

Had engine case halves done, cost was 70 dollars plus shipping, being on the east coast shipping with 1,000 ins was 25 dollars each way.Traditional glass bead blasting worked well on top end,but had I known about Brad at that time,I would have had everything vapor blasted.

walnut shell media is good for knocking off carbon deposits off of pistons, in ring lands, cyl heads and it doesn't remove the base material. glass bead works awesome, it will remove base material and warp sheet metal when blasted. for cases you should blast them with beads, rub everything down with scotchbrite pads then chase threads with a thread chaser or a home made one by cutting a lengthwise flute or two into the threads of a 6mm screw/bolt. after threads are chase blow with air.

Vapor blasting is the only way to go, I have done 6 bikes now and oil and grease comes right off.

Realise this was three years ago but on the off chance - also had my cases vapour blasted (very pleased) - did you treat/finish them in any other way afterwards? Having gone to the expense and got great results I'd like to protect that investment - y'all see there is water damage behind the right pot

I use a very fine glass bead and have had great results. If the cases are very dirty they will get a fine bead first and then go over again with the very fine bead. I can't remember the exact rating but Graingers has them listed that way. Fine might be 70-140 Sieve and Very Fine I think might be something like 140-320. The Very Fine is almost like dust. The finish holds up well to grease too. Have never had anything Vapor Blasted but I like the look.

Here are some before and after H1B cases I did a couple years ago with the Fine and then Very Fine Bead,
