About to clean off crank cases with glass/walnut shell mix,it worked well on jugs and heads, what precautions should be taken?Should gasket surfaces and bearing surfaces be taped off?
Thanks
Mike

Don't blast gasket surfaces and plug all bolt threads.

If you can find someone with a plastic bead blaster, you will not have to mask/plug. Hot soapy water spray wash, and plenty of compressed air - rinse - repeat!

Vapor blasting would be my first choice, but no one local has that ability. Will plug and tape off best I can, paranoid about beads getting where they shouldn't,just going to have to wash them several times and blast with compressed air and hope for the best!

Lime soda ash glass beads. Will not remove material. You can blast any surface. Wash out thoroughly. Will look like a brand new casting. Easy starting point for polishing. Fast.

Just curious, would walnut shells themselves be less disastrous to internals than glass beads if a spec was left behind?Plan on being as thorough as humanly possible with cleaning but still human.

In my limited experience, walnut shells on their own do almost nothing, you must use glass beads or other media to get it clean, then the walnut shells give more of a satin finish. I found it more trouble than it's worth to keep switching media, but if you have more than one cabinet...

That is why plastic bead blasting is the go - widely used in aviation. Of course cleaning is important, but that is your next best insurance!
