FWIW, I have revived tons of those cheap, external TerraByte+ drives simply by freezing them and then transferring the files before they overheat. Also, if the drive will not mount or the files seem scrambled or missing - Disk Warrior is quite amazing at file recovery.

I've done the freeze thing too Ian - thanks for the reminder, Root cause - don't frigging trust them!

Even "cloud" type online storage isn't safe. A few years back, one of the other forums I frequent crashed. Turns out the forums host server company accidentally dumped all of our data. They apologized, but said they couldn't recover the data. 10 years of forum knowledge gone in an instant...

The key word is "backup".
That means you have your data and it is also duplicated in another medium. So, if it is lost in one place it can be retrieved or replaced from another.
