Around the time I was born, James was a very popular name. In my high school days, there were three of us Jims that hung around together, and it was a little strange.

I was just going along with the chick, but my father did serve in WWII as an Army Air Corps pilot. He's 90 now, and on the downhill slope of life, living with us.

Jim, I hope you have been able to document your Dad's history, regarding his WW2 service - I would be interested to know where he served, and what type of aircraft he flew! Sorry to hi-jack the thread, but there are not too many veterans left now. He must have been young when he joined up!

Hijacking not a problem, since I think the early part got the point across. Dad flew cargo in a C-46 between China and Burma, over the big mountains. I believe he was around 21 when he joined, figuring that he would be drafted if he didn't enlist, and wanted to be a pilot and fly a P-38. After basic training, volunteers were asked for, for a new mission. No one spoke up, so the volunteers were randomly chosen, and he was one. The scared volunteers were then told they'd fly cargo, and the others would fly bombers. When he told me that story, I figured it was quite possible I'm alive because of it. He never did get to fly a P-38, but has a few interesting stories anyway, some of which lead to the fondness I have for the Pratt and Whitney R-2800.
