Agreed, piece of mind goes a long way. I have a set of NOS std pistons on hand and a set of .5mm o/s in route. My local shop is very familiar with these engines and will do either the hone only or bore and hone depending on piston clearance. I'm hoping we can run the std bore. Bearing is also in route along with seals and gaskets. Once the bore size is confirmed I'll get the copper cylinder head and base gaskets on order.
Question, what's the performance impact of pitting in the cylinder head chamber? Thanks

Negligible impact. Just get rid of sharp edges. It's probably worth checking the compression though, since it had non-standard base gaskets. Also I'd measure the port timing, since guys who use thick base gaskets usually make other port timing changes.

I bet a ring gap locator pin is missing on your piston, and that the ring gap has moved into the exhaust port.

I definitely need to remedy this issue. I did have good compression (135psi) at a time before I decided to find the cause of the noise. The head bolt was covered in oil as well, all other bolts were fairly clean. I have yet to find any dimensions for the cylinder. Can I resurface (min to clean sealing surface) the head without negatively impacting cylinder performance? Also, what's the impact of pitting in the head?

You said head? We are looking at top deck of jug where someone pried the heads off.

Cracked head or squeel from leaky head gasket.

Thanks for the notes, before I disassembled, I did check the compression and the left cylinder was 135, center 140 and right 135. The pins are all accounted for. The pry marks on the top of the cylinder led to slight oil weeping but still had good compression. The sound I am chasing didn't sound like exhaust pissing, IMO. I will have the heads checked. Thanks

Is this bearing pressed on the shaft? I was surprised to remove by hand. Thanks
