didn't take your comments in any way except helpful. I've never had a long meaningful discussion about vacuum gages with anyone, so i take every opportunity I can to harvest some info from those who have more experience than I

As for the air leak issue:
Looks like the electrical tape on the carb worked! The bike definately seems to be idling better (I achieved a 900 rpm idle tonight) and it is much smoother. The left cylinder also has a very consistent exhaust note now (it was a bit random before). I'm going to tape the other two carbs just to see if it helps out. Then I'll probably be in the market for some new boots. Too bad those things are worth their weight in gold...

Bonus: The piston rattle in the left cylinder largely went away at idle after I taped the carb. It now only rattles on rpm decline. I'm guessing the air leak was preventing the cylinder from getting enough fuel charge to light up properly, which was allowing the piston to just sort of flop around in there. I probably won't even check the timing and spark again since it seems to have made such a difference.

I'll keep everyone posted

Jason

The intake boots for an H2 should still be available from your local Kaw dealer.... Not too pricey.
