... you do something like this:

In my defense (aka excuses). The bike (H1F) was recently refurbished but it had a few issues so the refurbisher (Neil) took it back and delivered it back to me with a few more (different) issues and then left the country (He's with you at the moment talking to Rick Brett). Anyway, the kickstart doesn't return and the oil pump is doing an Exxon Valdez impression. I'm vertically challenged and only weigh 133 lbs, so even kickstarting a lowish compression bike like the H1 takes a bit of effort and after a few kicks and then leaning down to pick the lever back up it gets old quickly, hence the bodge.
I found a NOS spring in Germany and since Brexit hasn't happened yet, I ordered it - all I need to do now is to persuade Neil to fit it, I suspect a cash incentive may be required.

One question - it's currently running on Motul 2T mineral oil and we are leaving significant smoke trails (all 3 cylinders I think), if I switch to semi synthetic will that reduce the smoke? It starts up smoky and doesn't stop being smoky after 15 miles - which I don't recall it doing on the first ride - I've only ridden it twice because of all the problems.

Where to begin, the problems here are pretty much basic Triple 101......not meaning to be rude. If the basic engine assembly was correct, the kickstart is an easy fix, and over-oiling is endemic to 50 year old bikes and 2-stroke lubrication. Lots of information available, go for it.

Yes, semi-syn will reduce smoke. Adjusting oil pump cable setting can also help a bit.
Another very important detail is to rev it to redline frequently... not while sitting but on the road.

I can't take any credit, the bike was refurbished by Triplesworkshop (UK) and it's only done 120 miles after crank rebuild and rebore (and repaint, wheels, seat etc, etc). They used to say that the only time the McDonnell Douglas F4 Phantom stopped leaking was when it was empty, I think my H1 is trying to emulate that (but we're getting there).

This was just before delivery:

I'd always wanted a green one ever since I first saw one in 1974, I know the "F" didn't come in green and didn't have the cutlass paint styling either, but I think it's beautiful.
I have a 2016 Suzuki SV650 AL7 and stepping from a narrow V twin 4 stroke to a wide 3 cylinder 2 stroke is a bit of a shock. The last time I rode a triple was in the 70s.

the set up of my oil pump is done to reduce the oil consumption with quality half or full syntetic 2 stroke oil such Bel Ray or Motorex or Motul.
I use around 1.1 or 1.2 liter per 1000 kilometers which is a ratio around 1% per 100 with petrol.

I run Motul 510 which is the semi-synthetic and it does still leave a smoke trail. Not a lot but noticeable unless you’re giving it the beans and then yes it does get heavy. They also make 710 which is a full synthetic but I haven’t tried it yet.

I really love the blue H1 in the background of your pic! That’s the bike I lusted after in high school.
