Whats the difference between the "Outer clutch plate" and the rest of the steels on an S2?

Outer carries a different part number--is it thicker or something? Ive seen pictures online, but cant tell. It almost looks as if its wider at one side than the other, might be camera angles. Ive seem some lopsided looking steel plates over the years on other makes....

I have a giant box of clutch parts somewhere, Im gonna dig that out and pick thru it when I get the chance!

(Ive had the clutch apart many times over the years when I used to work on this bike regularly...I did have 7 steels in there, but they all look the same to me, very possible I left the outer one out of there way back when.......)

As i get to each step in the slow process of putting it back together, I am reading and checking diagrams etc, i.e. ..gonna check my steels for warping as well...try to address things I didnt know or think of 15 years ago!

Thanks in advance!

I dug out my spare clutch pieces, out of the 20 or so steels I had, they were all the same near as I can figure.
I also I had a different style clutch center in the mix.

I looked it up and its the difference between S2 and "S2-A"....one has an outer ridge cast in, the other would require that "outer" steel plate. The one that requires the outer plate was the one I had in there. I did have a regular steel plate to begin with on the stack.

With the S2A version, you have that surface cast in and start with a friction. I would suppose the S2A was an improvement, as the S3 was like that as well, maybe Ill put that center back in there. That would also take the "outer clutch plate" out of play.

Be aware that the pressure plate needs to be properly indexed to the basket.

On my S2A I ended up converting to S3 as the stock clutch wouldn't hold it after adding S3 carbs and chambers. If you do that you have to change to the S3 primary gear as well.

I hear you. I always had trouble with the clutch holding, always thought they severely under engineered it. I wound up going with some springs that I bought from this guy from Germany years ago, and they seemed to help.

Im going to put it back together with at least the later style S2 hub but I'll keep an eye out for an S3 unit.
