Hey Ron, a fellow rider of mine up here in the Sac area (we ride in the same group based out of the Roseville area, and I normally ride my 93 Honda Nighthawk) owns both Yamahas dualsports XT225 and XT250, and he's ridden one of these on our rides (not positive, but think it's the 250) which includes twisty mountain roads, paved goat trails, and occasional/short stints on the freeway, and says he loves this bike for it's versatility as well as performance.
Keep in mind, all of the other bikes are a minimum of 500cc on up, Nortons, Triumphs, Harleys, Indians, Hondas, Yamahas, etc., so aside from winding it up a bit at higher speeds of the freeways, he has no problems keeping pace with the group, and in the case of the paved goat trails, actually enjoys a reportedly smooth ride where the rest of us feel each bump and ripple.
So, you may want to look into either a good used one, or at Yamaha's 2018 XT250 for your consideration. He also loves the lightness of these bikes. Good luck!!!
