Great story, lots of us here where in the Air Force. I went in just after Vietnam ended and worked on B-52G's and KC-135's. I'm still amazed that
the B52H is still flying. Was stationed at Griffiss AFB in upstate NY, 416th Bomb Wing. We had F106's (49th Squadron) as interceptors back then.
The base closed in the early 90's but one of our best Buff's, 0225 is still the gate guard.

Very cool....I was always in awe of the pilots that flew the F4. Me: Electronic Countermeasures Systems Specialist (32853) on F4-E. Loved that bird....After my Air Force stint, went on to working on Hueys for the Army National Guard for another 10 years. Enoyed those as well....Unfortunately, a little hurricane took out my last AF base: Homestead. Rode a Suzuki GT750 all over southern Florida back then (1977/1978). Good memories.....

Did F-4 RTU at Homestead. D models. Got married at the base chapel there in '82. Really sad to see the place get blown away like it did. All that ECM training was kind of lost on Hueys wasn't it?

I was active duty Army early 80's don't much about jets but you pilots buzzed us ground troops a lot at the Yakima firing center in Wa. I liked getting buzzed  the lower the jet the better, I made only one distinc recognition from the engine sound it was the A-10 Warthog , very different sound you could hear it getting close and always knew it was an A-10 , I 'd like to hear and see one of those again some day

The Phantom has always been one of me favorites. I think I still have an unbuilt 1/32 Revell model of the F4D that I bought back in the late 70's. It's really cool that you got to see your old plane again. I have always imagined what it would be like to fly an F4.
