What was keeping the turbo lubed?

Mostly intimidation, I gave it a stern talking to before I ran it :D

Actually, I capped off the oil exit port on the bottom, and poured gear lube in the top. Basically, the bearing was just surrounded by oil. This is why I never ran it for more than a few minutes at a time. I knew going into it that it wasn't a long term solution, but good enough for the class project it was built for. I've probably run it 45 minutes total, and there is no appreciable bearing wear. If/when I fire it up again, I'll replace the bearing and rig up a proper pressurized oiling system.

We could use that at the fire pit at Deals Gap. No need for kindling. A 2s leaf blower though would be required for the start since it is a two stroke meet. :D
