Does that apply to all vehicles, or just motor homes?

I've always wanted a RV but like it has been already stated, the fuel will kill you!
Maybe the best compromise is a 5th wheel "toy hauler"
At least you'll be able to take advantage of the latest and greatest Eco-boost 1/2 ton out there?

My wife and I will be empty nesters in a couple years so we've been doing the "traveling talk" as well...
I think the big cruiser and hotels is the front runner so far though!

I have many friends with either big 5th wheels, big trailers and a really good friend/family that are HUGE RV people. They've just upgraded from a few year old monster to an almost new monster. They do a fair amount of family camping and such with it (although I don't see how that's camping) but they love it. The benefit for them is everyone can ride in it instead of many cars - there is an economy of scale there. For them with many people this works well.

I'm don't like the flying hassle, rental cars and hotels - but my wife loves them all especially the 5 star hotels so we do a couple of those a year.

We're major tent campers and the Colorado State Park Jewel of their system is 45 mins from my house (door to door). We have dogs too but Tent camping is fun but requires some effort and is not conducive for long-term travel. So we've been looking at smallish Airstreams and a new truck for me.

I would like a big RV if I was totally retired and traveling the US but I don't ever see doing that. Form follows function I think.

I've had some really good service from an old 31' Bluebird motor home over the years, traveling for work. It does save money compared to motels, and you can park at the client's facility and have zero driving to and from work while on the trip. Also, if you've never done it, it's pretty neat when you realize you can wake up in a different town every day, and still be in your own bed with your own kitchen, living room, bath, and all your stuff. It's not camping, and isn't meant to be. It's a portable house.

Also, I've never been chased out of the truck side of highway rest areas. I was in one on the way back from Florida one night, and at something like midnight a guard closed the gates so no one else could get in. It was like a little gated community. I understand you can stay the night at any Walmart too.
