I have restored more than a half dozen triples now and wonder why some start first kick every time.
I am finishing another 72 H2 this month and this bike starts so well. When I took it in last month it had been
sitting for a least 4 months. Started first kick, amazing. Had to take off the cylinders to bead blast off the black
paint that someone applied and decided it needed new pistons and a first overbore. Cylinders and heads came
back from Don K. and looked great a usual. Got it back together today and it did it again, started first kick, amazing.
Most of these bikes seem to take at least 2 or 3 kicks to start after they sit for a while but not this bike.

My own 72 always takes 3 or 4 kicks to start after it sits for a while. My thinking is maybe because it has
a lab seal crank that could be a factor. I always use my same All in one CDI test box to start a bike after
a rebuild so maybe some stators just have a lot more zap to them?

The carbs may be leaking a little fuel into the engine when the "good" bike is parked, causing it to start easier.

That is a good question. I have thought of that many times before. My best guess is it's all about pressures. Engines that have the right combination of ring seal, compression, vacuum, etc seem to have quick starting capabilities. As we know, worn engines can be a bear to start. Even identical engines built the same will have different characteristics. I think a tight engine delivers a strong, sharp signal to the carb which helps with starting. But that would be useless if the ignition did not work properly. Just as tolerances can produce a lemon, they can also produce a jewel.

If you know the bike is set up well, trying killing it at night (or after a ride) not with the ignition switch, but just by pressing the choke lever, using this method my Triples always start first kick the next day or the next week 8-)

My Girly Bike will start on the 1st kick if ridden daily. If it sets, ignition off, fuel and enrichener on , 2 priming kicks. Then ignition on and starts on 1st kick. The S2A and H2 will take several kicks unless ridden often.

The question was why some triples start on the first kick and some don't. I stand behind my answer that something is leaking a little gasoline when parked. Even if I'm wrong, I'm standing by it.

My H1 starts in 1 kick if sitting for 8 months or 8 minutes.
The carbs are 34mm on denco manifold blocks, so are at an angle. I think Jim is right that it has to do with an itty bit of fuel leaking in while parked or while shutting down. It also has rubber crank seals, which I believe help in starting as it doesn't take a "charging kick" as I believe a lab-sealed triple needs...

None of my Lab-sealed H1 or H2's ever started in one kick when cold. Always 3 or 4. Once warm, then yes.. one kick.
