Up here it's a bit different Jim. The insurance company accesses the damage, gives the quote to the body shop using genuine parts and it's up to the body shop to cut the corners all on their own.
Same result though.

Wow, I was about to say "generous insurance companies", but then I remembered various threads about what you guys have to pay them.

yeah I never said the body shop was innocent in all of this but I was in a strange city 1000 miles from home and not in a position to argue much. Honestly, as I insisted on real jeep parts to fix the car and grant is not a division of chrysler I just figured this was one place the body shop could bill for a real one, buy a fake, and pocket the difference or report an under estimate cost back to the ins company.

but there is a difference between a known cheaper aftermarket part and an outright fake. I am understanding about using the cheap aftermarket parts (I do not tolerate it and won't work with a shop that can't show me OEM parts installed). In one case they have to tell you about it being not an OEM part, and in another someone is defrauding someone.

my original point is that bogus parts have been around for a long time, and it was possible to get scammed before the internet was the wonderful imaginary turkish bazzar we have come to know and hate/love. Was it harder to move items? sure but not that much harder. I remember counterfit purse peddlers in NYC in the early 80's and those guys are still around.

YUP, ebay, Amazon and many other online venues are flooded with fake Coach purses.
My sons wife asked me to sell a real one for her a few years ago.
All the ebay questions were regarding it not being a knockoff.
I guess its the way of the world any more.

Nice to find and deal with honest folks when you do though.

At my job, we have been flooded with Chinese knock off Honda engines and parts. They seem to be cast from real Honda parts and can usually be interchanged and substituted. However the metal type and quality are wildly different. Sometimes it's not easy to detect. Sometimes you can vaguely see Honda part numbers still in the re cast parts. Recently I received a knock off Keihin carburetor off of a fake Honda and you could almost make out the name if you squinted. But clearly a P.O.S.
