I just bought a 2014. Very nice bike. 1050 cc, 140 claimed peak hp, 82 ft-lb torque, 11.8:1 compression ratio, and an 11000 rpm redline. I've only put 120 miles on it and am following the driver's handbook recommendation of not over 4000 rpm for the first 500 miles, and then a 6000 rpm limit for the next 500 miles. My question is, would it be better to break it in harder? Anyone have any knowledge about the best procedure? I don't want to end up with a sub- par motor, plus this is real boring. Thanks a lot.

U are definitely on your way to making your motor into a slug! Get on the gas to build cyl pressure, then back off the throttle to create vacuum in the cylinder to pull in oil to lube rings and cylinders. No extended high RPM's. But don't be afraid to get on the gas hard.

Thanks an awful lot. I have been giving it full throttle up to about 4500 rpm and then letting off. I do this a lot, but now I'm going to hit it much harder, mainly in second and third as I don't have a good place to go over about 60.

I gota agree, I just broke in the last rebuild on my Suzuki 1150. Broke it in hard, lots of full throttle acceleration and varied rpms, runs strong. Last time I rebuilt it 15 yrs ago or so I took it easy for the first 1000 miles and it never performed well, burned oil and the part number 2 cylinder never had the rings seat properly. I believe it was all in the break in, I was told that by a mechanic I respect, I listened and it seems to have worked.
Change the oil allot at first, but you probably already know that.

I agree, I normally do break in's 1/8 or 1/4 of a mile at a time without any ill effects. I can usually get 200 plus passes on a set of rings before compression drops more that 10%. Good warm up's and frequent oil changes seem to be the key to longevity.

Here is the method I used on my last new bike. http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm I would use it again on the next new bike I buy. Be sure to read the part about this should be done in the first 20 miles.

Short of running it too hard for an extiended period, me thinks that a functioning oil pump is all you need. My own belief is that rings seat relatively quickly. If I spend a $hitload on a bike I would want to err of the side of caution. just me. I have a tiger 1050. Motor is bulletproof. Sweetest sound besides the crack of a denco. Bought mine used, I flog it when I can. Never had a problem except it pings if you use regular gas on hard acceleration. The manual lies, put mid or high test and your good. Sounds like you have a tiger ,sprint, or speed triple. All excellent bikes.
