building models since the, err, early '60's....!!
me too but WWII aircrafts only, 1/72 scale, remember Short Sunderland, the Lancaster and the B 17 from Airfix and a Focke Wulf condor from (don't remember the maker)
Obviously the Arado AR 243 and the Blom und Voss 141 were my favorites with the Supermarine Spitfire 8-)

The Intrepid was top of the list when I went to NY.

To All

If you ever get to Dayton, Ohio.......home of the Wright Brothers.......go to the Air force Museum at Wright Patterson..........it's free and it will blow your mind.........they have an SR71 hanging from the ceiling, they have a two person YF12 (CIA version of the SR71) with the remote drone that mounts on the back of it, they have an entire B2 stealth bomber next to a B52, X-15 rocket plane, X-58 hustler. a new YF22........the Boxcar that dropped the A bomb......hundreds of perfectly restored planes by era in the big hangers........then you can take a bus tour across the base and see all of the really bizzare X plane stuff and tour the presidential planes........I go at least every 6 months and have for years..........It can take a full day if you take your time, I run thru it in a hurry and that still takes 2 hours. They have retired AF people working there and got to talk to one of the pilots, he flew both the SR71 and the U2 over China and Southeast Asia.......he said it took about 200 miles to get the SR71 slowed down and ready to land........mentioned seeing the sun come up and go down and then back up on a mission.......I have been to a lot of museums around the US..........this rivals Harrahs (something like 3000 cars) in Reno, NV........it is a must see !

I did see one coming in for a landing at Wright Patt when I was a kid, black and really at a nose up angle, sounded unusual

On my bucket list!

There has been a SR-71 in Tucson AZ at the museum for many years, awesome jet! Been there a few times.

I was lucky enough to go to an SR-71 dedication at Castle Air Force base. The plane did several low passes and concluded the show with a semi-knife edge pass on one afterburner followed by the landing and parachute deployment. I got pix somewhere stowed away. I also got to see a B-1 do a high speed low pass. Now that was impressive!

My wife went to Loma Linda University in the late 80's and we once attended an air show near there where the surprise attraction was a flyover of a SR-71. It came in low and then stood up on it's tail and took off like bat outa hell. It was the most spectacular thing I had ever seen. The crowd was absolutely stunned.

Going to an military air show in the Spring makes it a little easier to write that check on April 15th.

Come visit John, Wright Pat is just up the street from here. Last time I went they had at least one SR-71 on display. Those things kicked ass. The museum has all kinds of neat aircraft. Eisenhowers AF1 was cool too.

I snuck in a quick visit to Wright Pat last year on the ride out to Indy for MotoGP. Seeing the XB-70 has been on my hit list since I was a kid. To see it you have to take the "presidential tour" which means a bus ride over to the hanger where the Air Force Ones are. The R&D Gallery is right next door. So that's all I got to see due to time constraints. I will return for a dedicated trip!

You look straight down the nose of an SR-71 when you walk into the Air & Space museum at Dulles. Sadly I'll never get to watch one fly
