Fantastic workmanship, congrats, and well done!
Guess the worst I can do is screw it up and then send it to a pro.

Thanks Jim. By the way the worst you can do is screw it up... and just start over - it's no big deal.

The pro's can't afford to waste time or material like that as it all comes out of their profit margin. As an amateur your time costs you nothing, and you are investing it in your own bike after all so the results are there to be had. Spend time instead of money and you'll get that 'professional' result no problem. ;)

Not bad for rattle paint, and metallic blue to boot! :P

Nice paint and my vote for best bad ass pic :!: 8-)

Old-Nail what about the metal flake was there a trick to that , I think I could paint solid colors all day with good results but the metal flake looks like more of a challenge.

Metal flake is easy as long as you follow a few rules. Try to get an even amount of coats on everything, and don't shoot on thick, as the flakes need to lay flat. Thick coats will let them stand on their side.

I've seen that flake on its side look yuk , what about the gun anything special for the flakes?

I have a Craftsman basic spray gun but I can get a better gun if need be.

It's quite difficult to photograph but this is the metalflake effect in sunlight when using mica paint. 'In the flesh' so to speak, it's a true metallic paint with very small flakes, it's subtle yet beautiful, virtually the same effect as the original candies.

Proper metalflakes aren't DIY friendly as the larger flakes will clog a gun if the nozzle is too small. They also need agitating during the application otherwise the flakes will settle in the bottom of the cup.

The gun I used to lay this mica down had a 1.4 tip and I had no problems whatsoever. I used the same gun later for the clear. The only thing to be aware of when using 3 stage paint is that the more coats of translucent mica you put on over the basecoat the deeper your finished colour will get, so for matching purposes you are better spraying all your components at the same time. If that isn't possible for some reason, then count the number of thin coats you put on and apply the same number of coats to each part. I messed up on the tail unit (dirt fell in it) so I applied an extra coat to fix it, but now my tail unit is an ever so slightly darker shade than the rest.

Good info  since I don't know what tip size is in the Craftsman gun I'll do a test spry on something to see if I am able to do the flakes. Ordering decals today pics of the work will follow .

Most harbour freight type guns come with a 1.5 tip which is a good general purpose.

Damn guys, those look great!
Anyone have a makeshift paint booth? or you just laying down the newspapers...

How long would you recommend for drying in-between coats?

I think I may give this a shot since I have a lot of painting to do and another project I need to start saving for. ;)
