Why were you drilling a car ignition [/quote]

Most late model car igntions cannot be removed without the key turning it to the accessory or run position. When the cylinder goes bad and the key won't turn it anymore, you have to break out the drill and drill out the tumblers or side bar if it's a GM product. I'm getting pretty good service out of the Craftsman 19.2 volt drill. However I'm not impressed with the batteries, I've had 3 go bad where they won't take a charge. I did take my Dewalt apart, it was fried inside.

I always had good luck with stuck GM tumblers by putting a pair of pliers on the key and then hitting the end of the key with a hammer while turning it with the hammer. A new or less worn key also seemed to help with the GM ones. I did quite a few, never had to get the drill out.

I've learned that you can often judge a power tool's quality by the length of it's cord. The cheaper the tool, the shorter the cord. Every now and then you get lucky though, I've got a $10 tent sale 4" grinder that just. won't. die. I've had the thing 7 years or so, and used the heck out of it. Every time I use it, I expect it to die, and it just keeps going. It's the most reliable power tool I've ever owned, and there's not even a brand name on it

I like the Chicago Electric tools from Harbor Freight too. I've got a 1/2" hammer drill, 4 1/2" grinder, 7" grinder, and sawzall. I don't use them all day every day, but I use them quite a bit. The 7" grinder in particular impressed me. I use it a lot at work, it's as good as my co-workers name brand tools. The key to HF tools is to read the online reviews to sort the junk from the decent stuff, then wait until you have a coupon :D

It depends on the situation.I've been a locksmith for 31 years and have dealt with thousands of ignitons.I've had good success not drilling late model GMs especially Cadillacs. Drilling is always a last resort but I've seen locks superglued, knife blades ,sticks, scissors and whatever you can think of broken off in them. Those are some of the times when a drill is necessary.Drilling sounds really harsher than it is.I miss the old days when you could remove a broken lock by taking the steering wheel off, remove a few other parts and then remove the lock.
