I just got my bike running the other day and it is gutless on the high end. Can I hook up a timing light and if so how would I do this. My Clymer book seems a little vague to me and I don't really understand what their method is.
I put new plugs in after getting the oil pump primed and it doesn't smoke like a generator anymore so that part is ok. My air filters are not stock I purchased new singles (not K&N, just some cheap brand) for it at the local bike shop because I don't have the stock air box.
The air gap on the rotor is .025 and I have what I think are sp2 expansion chambers that leak a and spew a little oil out. I think Ive covered everything and am eagerly looking for advice.
Thanks!
Steve Ca.
P.S. Do I really need both the stabilizer on the steering? After reading the horror story about them I think I'd like to remove them if I really don't need them!

you might be chasing the wrong thing if it starts and runs the timing carnt be too far out and if you havent taken the ignition off the settings dont change , clean carbies if you havent and if you have give it a run without air filters , they maybe restricting it in high revs, or the pipes are clogged up , hope helps , if not go to how to on board there is a full description on timing setting thanks to you know who ( Max---)

If you go over 60 mph, you need a damper, or crash city.

You use a timing like just like you would on a car, but you need one capable of high enough speed for the RPM you're timing at. The Kaw manual says to time the CDI H series bikes at 4,000 RPM, which is 8,000 to a timing light made for 4-stroke engines. Also, you need something like a degree wheel on the crank, with a pointer rigged up, and a way to find TDC, like a piston stop.

The Kawasaki H series manual tells how to time those triples without the degree wheel, using the timing marks on the alternator. I don't remember which triple you have though.

For an inexpensive timing light that will handle high speed: http://www.kawi2strokes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=133&p=13929#p13929
