This was a real interesting thread. It reminded me of when I was 1st starting mine. It's always good reading when someone tells the story of how it came back to life.

Just an update. I got the petcock sorted out so it does not leak. I re-adjusted the float levels. No more seepage there. I finally had a feew minutes to take it out for a spin. It seems to run a lot stronger and and really wants to go! I am forcing myself to baby it but it's tough. It helps that the brakes are iffy...

One thing I noticed is there is a lot less smoke than when I first got it going. Is that normal? I can smell the oil in the exhaust but I am not getting the mosquito killing clouds...

Good going, Jim. Yes, if the float valves were leaking enough to make the engine run rich before, then the extra power and less smoke now is expected. You'll probably get a lot farther on a tank of gas too.

Ok I've got about 25 miles on it (all pretty easy). I've bene keeping it below 5 grand for the most part. I still have a couple of bugs to work out but so far so good.
One thing I noticed is oil dripping from the exhaust ports. Is this normal for a bike that is not being wrung out?

Is it coming out at the gasket area on the pipe and head, A great board member here told me take a used gasket and put it in with a new one and problem solved, I have done that with all my restorations and had zero leaks. I had the same problem. Nothing like oil coming down on a nice clean restored motor.

Yeah it's coming from the where the header goes into the jug. So two gaskets?
I thought it might be from putting around at less than 5 grand.
I also have oil seeping from the head on the middle cylinder :(

That's what I do, I save my old gaskets and put a little amount of high temp silicone, just enough to get it wet, don't over do it. I put the old gasket to the head first then the new one and tighten evenly. On the head leak make sure you clean the head bolts with a tap and then blow them out with air, I also lap my head surface and barrel surface with a lapping stone before I set the head gasket, That's what works for me. :D

Did you re-torque the heads when cold after each heat cycle?
