I decided to chase down a few leaks today, the drive sprocket shaft being one of them. Oil appears to be leaking out from the center of the spacer.

Is there supposed to be an o ring behind it or something? The transmission seals are new. Oil seems to be leaking from between the drive shaft and the "collar" or metal spacer. This is on a H2a

There is a o ring on the other end of the collar that gets destroyed when you tighten down the sprocket. That's probably it.

towards the transmission, right? can't see how it would work towards the sprocket. It never had one when I disassembled it.

This is true. Where I grew up the hills were so steep and long, when your ball rolled down the hill you just said "screw it"...

The placement of the O-ring has been discussed before and its placement is not shown correctly in a lot of manuals and parts books. Look here: http://www.3cyl.com/mraxl/manuals/maint ... .htm#trans
and pay close attention to the note in red.

Note: The O-Ring shown behind the engine sprocket should be located between the spacer and ball bearing.

The steel spacer collar should also have one end of it with a larger chamfer than the other. The larger chamfer goes in, it holds the O ring in position. The O ring actually takes the shape of the chamfer, and the bearing relief in the inner race to shaft interface as it is pancaked into place.
