Hi Don,

Jim is totally correct in how the crank is phased. I don't know what benefits you would gain by altering the phasing to something like 180 degs apart, the two outer cylinders firing together at TDC and then the two inner cylinders firing together at BDC. I think this is how King Kenny's Yamaha TZ worked? That motor worked really well and sounded awesome! If I have got this wrong please correct me. :)

Hey Chris,

I understand why to run 90 degs and why to run a 180 split. If you can hookup the power a 90 deg crank makes I'd run 90 deg. But on the other hand if traction is not good the 180 can be the difference. I to believe the TZ dirt track motors ran 180 degs for this reason. Did the road race TZ run 180 degs?

All yamaha 4's, race and street, used 180 cranx. They gave KR a kill switch that dropped #3 cyl for "traction" on the dirt miler bike. They didn't monkey with crank phazing till the 90's when Honda came up with the big bang set up
which was a totally different and bizzare gig.

but these were race bikes... street bike would do better with 90 degree phasing regarding driveability.

hello guys am new here, First I dont know if am postin this at the right section if not can someone pick it up an chuck it back at me an give me a heads up ? So, I was checkin out the 4 / 5 cylinder set-up thats some good stuff out there. I had been on with one of these a few years back and then I got hung up with other stuff and work got in the way etc etc, anyways interesting to see a few of you guys on with these. one dilemma I had back then was the crank phasing and thats was I was googling when I got a link to here, so. heres where Im at,, I see one way is all cylinders firing independantly IE 1.2.4.3 / 1.2.3.4. / or in the way I was thinkin of goin with 2 cyls at a time IE 1.4 and then 2.3 I think I got that from an article I read way way back from the aforementioned simon whitelock ?? the way I thought it would have to be was 4 seperate sets points /condensers/coils for the 1.2.3.4 /1.2.4.3 and struggled how to get ma head round mounting all that hardware !! or go with the 1.4 / 2.3 and use two triggers /points etc and two dual output coils as both would spark at the same time but I see you talk about two units I think petronix (what and where do you get them are they the same as that accuspark stuff?) or similar and have them firing at 90 deg and two pick-ups at 180 deg runnin with two dual output coils is that for the 1.2.4.3 setup? you mention wasted spark ,is that ok in a two stroke. Id like to get back on with this maybe over the winter, well at least restart, so was hopeing maybe one of you guys could explain it to me or help with a wee wiring diagram or a link to some help thanx off to do some homework

An accessible place to look would be the RZ 500 Yamaha. They stuck with what they knew best and had the opposite corner cyls fire together using a pair of 180 deg cranks.I can't recall the specifics of the layout of the ignition but there is a member here with 3 such machines.

As I posted earlier, I think you will get into transmission problems. They are really light duty, and doubling the torque load would not be a good thing.
