It's not any one thing. You just need alot of experience with triples with rubber seals then switch to labs. You will notice that the bike doesn't seem to rev as quickly off idle. Not as snappy. But it's a very fine difference with a good set of lab seals. Most people never notice because their rubber seals were bad for so long even a bad set of labs runs great by comparison. On an RD the clearance is .0015", most labs you see for a triple are around .006". The H1 and S series don't seem to have the same problem as the H2 as their seal area is wide for both seals. The benefit on an H2 is that it won't run worse over time due to degrading seals.

Make sure the distributor timing is correct. With one cylinder at near top dead center, make sure the distributor rotor is actually opposite the contact for the same cylinder coil. If not, remove the brake lever, loosen the sidecover and slip the cogs until it is. There is two timing points to watch... the actual spark timing and this... the cylinder timing.

Chris,
Keep at it. Eventually you will find one dumb item that you will never forget and the bike will be easy to start.
My completely original, never rebuilt, H1D used to start by the 3rd kick no matter how long it sat.

Not sure how long the bike was apart, but did you clean the carburetors before installing? If the bike bike sat more than a month, the fuel leftover in the carbs will already be turning back into the dead dinasour that it was many years ago.

Dayle, his '74 H1 has the "distributor" built into the alternator, on the left, assuming the engine is still a '74. I think you're talking about an early H1 high voltage distributor.
