49) Install the lock plate with the tang into the keyway slot, and then screw on the primary pinion nut, with the flat side
facing in. Insert a connecting rod retaining plate under the small end of the connecting rod of the right-hand cylinder and then.......................

This is on page 50 of the Glenn's manual.

Just wondering what guys use for locking the crankshaft when torquing the Primary Pinion Gear.

Thanks, Ed

This is probably not for "real" mechanics...but for hacks like me - I've put copper plumbing pipe through the rod small end and let that rest on a hardwood block on the gasket surface of the engine case.

A penny, new one, the zinc type, or a folded paper towel. A rag will come apart and is hard to dig out of the teeth. The rod option is good also. Don't for get blue loctite.

I use an old Yamaha transmission gear that has a few teeth broken off it, inserted into the primary and clutch gears to lock the crank to tighten and torque the primary gear retaining nut. It has worked for decades. I don't like putting a static load like that on a connecting rod, just my preference.

I use a second pinion gear to lock it.

Thanks for the tips. I like the second pinion gear idea.
