I think it's splashing out =common problem with all mine in the past. I recently went a gel - I'd have to look up the type - no more issues.....

I'd put a new battery in it.

I wonder if you could be getting AC into the battery?

Thanks all. I won't have time to deal with it until Friday.
Evans, it is showing volts DC. My old school analog VOM would go crazy if it we getting AC. However, I thought the same thing. So, before I ran it last time I verified path from coil to rectifier and rectifier to battery and no path from battery hot lead to white AC lead.

If the 1/2 wave rectifier failed shorted, you'd get AC to the battery. You can set your old school meter to AC and read the battery voltage. If doing that with the engine not running shows voltage, then you can put a microfarad or so capacitor in series with a meter lead to block DC. Some AC meters are sensitive to DC but most aren't. So once you're reading zero volts AC with the engine off, start it and see if you get an AC reading.

Alternatively, you could use a meter with a diode test setting to check the rectifier diode.

Checking the rectifier was one of the first things I did. It is good.

Than I'm back to voting for vibration as cause.

I'd have to say Jim might be on to something. My 71 is similar and it has 6.8 at the battery when running so you're probably good there. I wonder if the top on your battery is glued on good.

Problem solved, but weird.
This morning I discerned that the fluid was low on the cell adjacent to the vent tube (which is where I was loosing fluid). I swapped to another new battery (same brand and everything) and the acid is not coming out. How weird is that? There must be something with the manufacture of the first battery that was causing the acid to wick out the vent tube or to splash over. :x I will be away for the next hour or so breaking in this motor!!! :e11 Whoo-hoo!
Thanks everyone for your help!

Glad you solved it. I do a little trail riding and occasional wheelie and long suffered acid splashing and sometimes the overflow tube would come off and make a mess too. I went sealed batter and never went back.... Just sayin.
