The old interceptors, are very complicated motors, I would shy away. The fizzies are great bikes. The KZ's are bulletproof, but heavy. The EX 500 is a great bike for fun and has some power, light too.

Not sure if it is what you are looking for but you might be able to get into a decent rd350 at that price. I think any "sport" bike after about 1995 is going to have the cramped up feel to it. EX500 like Moo mentioned would be a decent bike with more of a sit up position to it and the 250 ninjas as well like already mentioned.

You may also be able to do a dirtbike bar conversion on a true sportbike. There should be options out there with popularity in the stunting crowd.

GPz550...simple, elegant, with an upright riding position, and will still get plenty of respect at a bike night.

I found out that it's more fun to ride a slow bike fast... (etc.)

Did you catch my latest DT100 video, Rod?

Agreed, but I'd still go big displacement for the grunt. :)
You could get a 1200 Bandit in your price range.

When I got my H2 (new, '72), it was the fastest, meanest, lightest, shortest, stoppingest (yes) thing you could possibly get. When I got my ZX10r..... the same! To each their own, I just like fast, agile, light bikes! I'm 5 minutes from "Deals Gap" type roads here, there's plenty of room and twisty roads. Hey, Jim, point me to a link! (I had a AT-1 (?) Yamaha 125cc for a few months as a road bike way back, it was full throttle everywhere, and fouled plugs!) Bikes like the Bandit 1200 are great, but they are big, and they are HEAVY!! I guess a lot of guys can't fit on a sports-bike, I'm about 5'9" and 155, and they fit like a glove!

In the Yamaha chat section: http://www.kawi2strokes.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=10919

I have some possibly better video of that day, I just need time to edit and upload it.

Great stuff, Jim, you'd take care of the ZX10 around there, easy! What you really need for that track is a drum-braked H1, with the stands removed.......! (That is a bit like the track I started racing a H1 on in '70...... )
