If it was a carb issue the starter fluid would have brought it to life, skip the carbs and swap coils. ;) Also check your center pickup.

This may seem out there, but check to make sure the intake skirt is still on the piston (you can see it thru the manifold when you have the carb off.)

also when the bike was running on the 2 outer cylinders there was strong pressure out of the exhaust pipes but very little out of the center pipe

Check the 2 small wires to the center pickup coil. If one is not connected no spark. They are thin wires and I had that same problem a few
years ago. Also make sure the air gap is correct.
