I just got a Vermont title for my little Yamaha. It's very easy as long as the bike is under 500cc. All you need is a bill of sale, (and they don't really check it). Moto-recycle is the place. I filled out their request, got a power of attorney notarized, and sent them about 200 bucks. In about three weeks, I had a vermont plate and transferrable title.

Where do you live now, Lane? I thought it was SC. I think it's easier than what you had to go through now. I know it is in NC.

If you try California first and they refuse....and then try the Vermont route, the "numbers" will probably come up in the California system and then you would be "doubley-screwed" (wasted money trying both routes)

I hate to say shoulda woulda coulda, but you shoulda just went the Vermont route in the first place and been done with it.

The system is so messed up that it is sometimes necessary to take the path of least resistance when trying to get something like this accomplished....

I know when I get a "vintage" bike out of Wisconsin with a free and clear title, I just throw it in the trash and apply for a fresh Minnesota title.
Reason being, it is easier to jump through the hoops of applying for a lost title then it is to successfully convince the mental midgets (and I mean no offense to those with legitimate mental disabilities) at the DMV that the Wisconsin title is WRONG and that the morons across the border used to title bikes off of the engine number (yeay Harley! :e9 ).

absolute nightmare getting a couple of sets of numbers switched around, and not worth it.

but I digress.........

I'm really trying to beat Ca. at there own game Cody. They made it personal last Tuesday and really pissed me off when they told me
no go with either bike because of one stupid form. It shouldn't come up in Ca. system if they refuse to title because they can't really track
vin numbers less that 17 digit  I was livid when I left the DMV Tuesday so that's why I took Friday afternoon off and spent it at
a different DMV. If they do title the RGV it will probably have to use a DMV generated 17 digit vin plate. That was the form I didn't have
Tuesday. I'm lucky that I have a phone number to the head office and I have called so many times they know me by name. There
the ones I called before I bought it on ebay and told me no problem getting a title because it's 25 years old.

I could always make it a track bike and several of my buddy's here want to get into vintage racing. Looks like I'm getting a H2R replica
in the shop soon. Maybe the racing bug will strike

VT isn't what it use to be. Before the internet a handful of Enduro Riders in New England, NY, and NJ use to register dirt bikes in VT. Now, with the influx from everywhere thanks to the internet they are starting to ask some folks to have a pre registration inspection done, this happened to a buddy of mine on a KTM, and I got called in for my RGV250 after a few years of registration for a VIN check. I brought it there in a snow storm and read the VIN off to a guy who did not want to go outside and climb up into the back of a pick up, "no problem all set, he quipped". There seems to be no policy, just random stuff. It was no big deal for me to drive a couple hours to Bennington but I've heard of guys in Hawaii getting plates  Good luck with the VIN check from there. The problem is not the guys who go there and just register a bike so they can ride it and have fun. It is the guys who take the VT reg. back to their home state and apply to get a title that are raising the flags. And then, blast it all over the internet like they are conquering heroes. But, it does bring in money to VT, so who knows where it will go. I'm not saying folks here shouldn't try and register a bike in VT, just don't blow a horn about it.

I considered going the Vermont title route and then take their title and plate to Ca. So say that I did, and got a Ca title. I would always
be thinking ok, sooner or later they might pull the title and maybe take the bike. When I saw the RGV on ebay last month I called
Sacramento and asked if it was possible to title this bike. Was told if it's 25 years old it's possible, not easy, but possible. Lots
of 85 RG/RD 500's started showing up here titled after 2010 so that's encouraging.

Beware that there is language in the Vermont DMV that prohibits bikes 250cc and under from being registered- that last time I checked.
I tried to register my then new CR500AF (which came with a CR250 title - the bike Service Honda uses for the conversion), and Vermont took my cash and gave me ATV plates!
:banghead
You might have better luck in Maine...

As I posted earlier, I went through moto-recycle, registered a Yamaha 100, which is a bit below 250. I did not deal with Vermont per se.

I'm still in South Carolina, and looked at the new rules in SC about titling older vehicles. The route I took was the route of least resistance. It may have cost a little more. I still should get the title transferred, but I have been told that I can renew the Vermont title and registration yearly if I so choose.
