I was always told it was for the hard starts they need to do and when they over rev them so high.
You can make a gs motor turn WAY above it factory redline as long as you don't have a charging system on it. I imagine it's the same for triples. I have my redline at 10,500 on my gs and it has a charging system, some day I'll break it

Interesting
Why does the charging system tax the crank that much?

It's the weight of the rotor hanging on the end of a vibrating crankshaft, Jim. H2s have the same problem at very high speed. I'm sure you've seen outboard support bearings on drag bikes that still use the alternator rotor.

Got it
I thought the inference was that the charging system supplied load.
IMO there is no reason to wing up a street GS that high, and if it's a track bike no need for a charging system unless required by rules.
The extra bearing idea seems good although if you are THAT serious, I would think you would just make a light unit or go to an MSD type system.

I rarely take my triple past 7,000 RPM on the street; just seems like needless wear and I always have another gear to use (unlike you 125MPH guys)!

Actually, I have an H2 12V powered CDI unit that works off the stock pickups available. I need to get it on my web site.

Really cool Jim; that will be great for a lot of racers.
How long before variable timing, shift light output, and rev limiter?

With a total loss ignition do racers plan on the length if the race and chose a power source to suit?

Imho the charging system doesn't bother the motor when rev'd up ........
Mine has always had the charging system on just to run the tail light.........it's been 8.62 with Brian Pretzel on it

We have an ignition tester, spins the big rotor up to 10,000 rpm, with a one HP motor, it doesn't have a great deal of parasitic loss. Our bike has never had a welded crank in it nor has it ever had a Falicon.
