I have been on the Manx grand prix website and trawled through to find this picture of Dave out in practice for the races.
He is wearing the orange jacket for practice to show that he is a newcomer to the circuit.
Saturday nights session was one lap, for the newcomers only, at controlled speed behind a traveling marshall .
All other practice sessions were cancelled due to a lack of trackside marshalls! :o
Monday nights session was one lap only (not newcomers) due to the mist coming in!!
It was eventually decided by the clerk of the course that the newcomers and classics could go as far as Ramsey (around 25 miles or so out on the 37 mile circuit) and then the rest of the lap would be at controlled speeds by the marshalls over the mountain section through the mist.
The newcomers and classics are due to be first away in tonights practise session at around 6.30pm.
The picture is taken in last nights session and it looks like its Kirk Michael corner around about 14 miles out on the lap.

Heres Monday Nights practice session report :D

The first qualifying session for the 2012 Manx Grand Prix Festival got underway on the Isle of Man with conditions reported as good on the Mountain Course.

However, it was a frustrating evening for competitors as fog closed in on the mountain section during the opening lap and riders were only able to get a lap in before the first session was flagged.

Ahead of the session, riders were advised of damp roads after the exit of Handleys, at Ramsey Hairpin and Governors Dip. Blustery winds were reported on the mountain section with poor visibility between the Verandah and Kate's Cottage.

The Junior (600cc) machines were first away with Paul Smyth (9), the 2011 Junior MGP runner up, on a Suzuki and Andy Lawson on a Kawasaki the first pair away. Smyth was first on the road to Glen Helen but Jamie Coward was quickest to Glen Helen and also posted the fastest time of the evening - 169mph - through the Sulby speed trap.

Mike Minns clocked the fastest lap of the night with 112.4406mph (00:20:07.997) on his 650cc Kawasaki ER6, while Yorkshire's Jamie Coward with 111.4656 (00:20:18.564) and Trevor Ferguson, who clocked 111.4656 (00:20:18.564) were also quickly into their stride.

Clerk of the Course Phil Taubman kept the roads closed after flagging the first session after only one lap, hoping that the fog would lift and the Classic, Lightweight and Newcomers could all get at least a lap in. Shortly after 7.30pm he decided that the second session could leave the Grandstand but that riders would then be flagged at Parliament Square in Ramsey and escorted over the mountain in a speed controlled session by the travelling marshals. The lap will at least be counted as a qualifying lap.

Hey guys, well, it is a little hard to express the words to explain what trying to learn and race the IOM is like. I think you all know the plot 38 miles, 200+ corners, many blind and lined with things that hurt.

The weather was crap when we arrived and the mountain section of the course was closed so upto the first supervised lap, I had driven around 3/4 of the track twice in a van. I was lost, I did not even know which way the corners went.

I borrowed a road bike, the weather got better and I did 8 laps to learn which way the course went.

The stunted second practice was better at least I knew where the corners went, well the corners that are apparent at 70-80 mph not 120-130. I also realized I was slow on blind right had corners. The thinking guys on the board can figure that out.

Last night on a wet but drying track, I got 2 laps on the P&M and 2 laps on the ZX6. These were the first laps on the P&M, which went and handled well, I did an 88 mph lap still learning fast. I then set out on the 6, a bike blew in front of me at Crosby and coated my visor with oil, oil and then sun in yours eyes creates some interesting colors and totally blinds you. I rubbed my visor clean and lifted it up until I turned away from the sun at Ballacrane and completed the first lap. I was serious planning to come in after the 1st lap. As i came across the mountain I saw that some clouds were coming across the sun, so I decided to carry on for the second lap.

Lap 2 I started to relax, the change in light seemed to make it easier to see the track. I posted a 91 mph lap. Kicking myself at all the mistakes I was making across the mountain. 3 more days of practice before the newcomers race on Saturday.

Dave
