Just heading back from Daytona. Well the season is over, phew, that was a lot of racing!!

Friday at Daytona:
TZ750 blew a head gasket, dumped water everywhere
H1R sheared off all the clutch bolts
BH - won F250, also beating Roper in GP350 on the line by a wheel. Lap time 2:24
Z1R - 2nd in Superbike and a really big slide in the chicane, I am still puckered. 3rd in FVintage Lap time 2:12
Lorraine - CB with a borrowed engine was slow and two spokes broke on the rear wheel of the A1R

Sat/Sun
TZ750 despite a lot of work it still puked out coolant so I parked it
H2R Open GP, could not stay with the other TZ, 2nd place, Lap time 2:12
H1R fixed the clutch, leading the race when it nipped up, woops
BH - won again
Z1R - same results but did a 2:11. As a reference point we had some CCS racer there and the best times were in the 1:51's
CB still slow

This year:
5 AHRMA championships, F250, F500, FVintage, Superbike and OpenGP
3 "World" championships, F500, Superbike and OpenGP
2 Lap records at Mosport
2 crashes on the TZ, no broken bones.

Take a close look at both the water pump and its drive gear, and thermostats on the TZ, they are known for sometimes tearing stuff up.

and considering how it all started, who woulda thunk the bighorn would be the "reliable" bike out of that group?

I know exactly what you mean on Bighorn reliability. That was 3 years of near continued failure until it ran and shifted reliably. Glad I stayed with it.

You never want to race a TZ700/750 without the thermostats in place. The engine won't cool correctly, because the coolant won't stay in the radiator long enough to bleed down the heat.

I used to get a whole year out of a set of head O rings, but they really can square off if they get hot enough, and the flats on the O rings will let coolant migrate right past them. Also, the real sealing is in the head and cylinder surfacing, and they can get warped, not usually enough to cause a direct leak, but, bad enough.

I remember the water jacket O ring was always black in color, but, the original compression O rings were black, replaced by a better material orange ring. Never had an orange ring leak.

The only reason the O rings are in the mix there is to hold the eater in the jackets, sealing of compression is done completely by the flat surfaces of the head and cylinder. Might also look into the head studs, sometimes the studs and nuts get some corrosion on them from the water only racing organizations demand, and they can get to a specific torque in the corrosion, and not completely compress the head to the cylinder enough to seal.
