Spent 5 minutes and $183 at the FL DMV today.
I took the bill of sale,(which they never looked at),
another VIN verification form (local) which they DID look at,
and the VT registration. I had the VT plate too but they didn't want it either.
Transferred the VT registration that I got in the mail on Monday.
Ordered personalized plate number 11, and got a brandy new title and registration.
No questions asked. The girls were completely familiar with the process.
The whole thing took about three weeks start to finish.

Yep...that's how it's done here in Florida! Got my TZR250 and NSR250 tagged and titled the same way! Mine was cheaper thru Vermont tho, as they didn't have a book value on the grey market imports Had to take my word for it

I know there aren't many of us in Indiana, but I thought I'd share my experience. Used to be that you could do it like (apparently) it can be done in Alabama - wander in to the BMV, hope you get someone cooperative and sympathetic. Now it's more bureaucratic, but still pretty simple. Go to the BMV website, and find the "Affidavit of Ownership" packet.

Ideally you've done this before buying your new bike - if so, print out the odometer disclosure and bill of sale forms, and take them to the seller with you. Let the seller know you'll be sending them a certified letter, and ask them to REFUSE it when it comes.

Get the VIN checked by the police, fill out the rest of the paperwork, send the letter, wait for it to come back, then send the whole mess to the BMV central title processing office. In a couple weeks, your new title arrives in the mail.

At least, that's how it all went for me. Could have been quicker and less hassle, but the total cost, including postage and title fees etc only ran about $40-$45, so I'm not complaining!

Is there a website that you can run a nationwide vin check for older (short) vin numbers. I am trying to run done my frame and find out what state it was
last titled in. So for Ca, no and Oregon no. Don't want to have to call 48 more DMV's

I had no problem getting a Vermont registration for my RGV250. Spent 5 months trying to get a Ca. title and was shot down after they told me
from the start that I could. I used Moto Recycle http://www.motorecyclenow.com/title-service.html and they where great and fast too. Nice thing
about the RGV is being only 250cc I didn't even need a vin inspection.

I asked about getting a missouri title for a motorcycle with a Vermont registration, and was told by the dmv, In lieu of a properly assigned title you will need documentation from Vermont stating they do not title units over 15 years old in addition to a descriptive bill of sale which lists the seller’s Vermont address.
I emailed them back and told them I had to submit the bill of sale to Vermont to get the registration and this is what they said.
You will need documentation from Vermont stating you are the legal owner of the vehicle, in lieu of the properly assigned title, since they required to mail the document to them. If they will not issue such a statement you may wish to seek the advice of a legal professional for information pertaining to being awarded legal ownership of the unit.
I would think the registration is proof of ownership. WTF?
