I always tell people that their head should be left of center on a left turn and right of center on a right turn. It moves some weight to the inside; kind of forces you to look around the corner; is easier to push on the handlebar.

I have road raced for a long time and do not feel comfortable in the center of the bike in a turn.

Anybody remember just whom started the "hang off" riding style?

1972, Paul Smart, whom rode a bunch of bikes that didn't handle well, like the H2R. He told me it was the only way he could get one to go around a corner.

From my point of view, corners feel hugely better when I'm hanging off, and if my knee puck is on the pavement, I instantly feel much more in control. Up until that moment, I feel like I'm leaning a lot, but once it touches, everything calms down.

In the late 60's I had an A7 that was stock. It was a little wiggly in the corners so I would hang off the inside and that calmed it down. I was just a kid riding the few paved roads in southeast Iowa.

What we figured out with Paul's method was that it creates a new, completely different center point of lean gravity, in that the are is no longer a straight line interacting with the ground in lean angle, but, literally two lean gravity centers. It is like one main lean, enhanced with less lean on the chassis by adding a second gravity parameter.

Seems to have worked well for decades. The fairly new next parameter was/is Vale's leg "turn signal", everyone seems to be using it.
