I especially like the VW Bosch distributor, but, it has one too many firing pulses per revolution to suite me.

Why? I do a considerably better real HEI distributor for those engines right now, don't need a vacuum advance only Bosch 'Load-A-Matic' mess for anything. When I worked at R.C. Engineering, we had an adapter drive that fit Honda CB750 4's that used a Mallory replacement VW distributor, sitting upwards, behind and to the side of the cylinder. Didn't like that one, either, bad advance mechanism, not good. ONLY benefit, ONE set of points for all 4 cylinders.
