Helloooooo peeps,
I have an H1 engine that came from the States, having been used in a racing kart - it has Lectron 36mm Powerjet carbs, some porting etc - it's going in my Tony Foale QR1 HCS bike.
But, it has no electronics at all. Nothing on the end of the crank...

So, I'm in need of the required stuff to make the sparks, and run the lights.
I was looking at buying a PowerDynamo system, but there seem to be a LOT of horror stories with them, so what do I need, and who has it for sale please?

Thanks, Mark.

If I were in that situation, I think I'd try to by the parts to put together a stock H1D/H2 type system, or a late H1 system. The stock magneto CDI systems produce excellent sparks and are quite reliable.

Thanks for the reply Jim.
So, a Lakeland H1D all-in-one CDI unit, and an H1D super regulator, plus three HT coils is all I would need in addition to the bits on the end of the crank?

There are two ways that could go:

Way 1:
1. get H1D/H2 alternator (H2 requires re-keying rotor for H1)
2. get H2 CDI, either stock or Lakeland
3. get regulator, stock or Lakeland or other
4. get three CDI type coils of your choice

Way 2:
1. get late H1 alternator
2. get late H1 CDI, either stock or Lakeland
3. get regulator, stock or Lakeland or other
4. get three CDI type coils of your choice, but they have to have ungrounded primaries (not H2 type)

I like Way 1 better because it does not have the distributor, along with its carbon brushes, etc.. Some prefer Way 2 because the late H1 alternator does not have the low speed magneto coil, which has very fine wire and has been known to fail.

Carl, I think you may have posted this to the wrong thread. :P

Jim, thanks for the advice.
I too prefer not to have a distributor, so I will continue my search for a good H1D alternator and pickups etc.
New electronics, in place of original, for the CDI and Regulator is most definitely preferable!

Thank you.

:D

You probably know, but I have replacement low speed magneto coils for the H1D/H2 stator, so if you found one with a bad LS coil, you could replace the coil and be in business.

Oh cool - I didn't realise it was so straightforward to replace a burned out LS coil, having never physically seen the armature and windings, I thought it would be a pig pain in the ass to rewind...
That should help. Cheers.

Here's a PDF file of the instructions. It's not a snap to change, but it's not hard either.

What a well written and illustrated guide - thank you. Something I can sit in my wheelchair and do while my leg fixes - when I get my hands on a stator.
I'd actually prefer to get one with a known bad coil, so I can replace it and know it's good...

Cheers, Mark.
