Distributor & early CDI parts are very expensive... if it were me I'd convert to points or later H1 CDI. Conversion to points is pretty simple. Points plate, points cam, 3 coils... maybe rotor.. can't remember for sure.

I have another h1 that was made 12/72 it's considered a 73, it has the nice 3 pickup 3 coil 3cdi system. It's totally missing the top end, I think I'm going to Frankenstein them together and see how I do, thanks for the replys!

H1D same ignition that a H2 best ignition of all k triple range :mrgreen:few differences between H1D and H2 but easy to solve

Just to make it clear... the motor and topend is the same for H1A/B/D ('71, '72, '73).
Engine covers differ.
Each of the different models have different ignition systems (Early CDI, Points, H1D/H2 CDI).
Any ignition system will work on any motor, however, rotor, ignition coils, wiring harness, controls, differ between all three.
The charging system is different on the H1D. (better)
The best ignition system is the H1D/H2.

The easiest swap would be to put the '71 topend on the '73 giving you the best ignition system with the fewest headaches. That is assuming your '73 is at least nearly complete. Parts for the '73 sould also be easier to obtain and less expensive than the others.

The 73 is mostly complete, but it's in rougher shape. A thrust washer on the right hand connecting rod let go, the top end is completely missing like I said. So can I take the crank from the 71 and put it in the 73 cases and make it all work(71 top end too) ? I have multiple project going on right now so idk when in going to tackle this. Thanks for the replys!

There may be a problem with the orientation of the keyway on the alternator end of the crank, but I'm not sure.

H1D and H2 do reference the magneto rotor in different positions. Memory doesn't serve me, possibly, both rotor and crank stub key ways differ. I have heard of people installing both rotors, without the key, phasing them, and using the bolt to lock them down, but, I wouldn't do that. I'd do a key way, too easy to spin rotors on the crank stub without the key.
