I have had to deal with it a couple of times when getting a bike from Wisconsin. Back in the '70's, all the WI motorcycles were titled off of the stupid engine number, and it is an utter nightmare to try to explain that to the DMV here when applying for a CORRECT MN title.
I'd try to be-friend a certain person at your local DMV and before any paperwork is started, find out the proceedure to do it all in one shot.
