The guy I mentioned earlier that did my crank had a jig that ran the crank between centres. Absolutely the wrong way to do it IMO. No accounting for a bad centre or a bent crank snout... But he was doing it for 30 years so what do I know right?

Well, I suppose if you used dead centers you'd avoid one of those problems.

The centres are not the datums of a triple crank assembly though. It only adds measurement error.

I advise customers if the crank is going to sit for a while before assembly to store it in the case to avoid this situation.

Hey Charlie....I bought a bike from Cody that included a crank rebuilt by you, 2-3 years ago?
It is still in the box that you shipped it in and I am now preparing to assemble the motor.
Any advise?

Thanks

PS. Maybe this thread is good for something after all?!

Just check it for true before you install it. I like Walms' idea above if you don't have a way of checking it.

The idea with the cases as the jig not with the centers just to clarify.

The last crank I got from Damon was so bad it wouldn't turn in the cases. I had to send it back twice before he fixed it. To be fair, he did offer to pay all shipping costs. Heck of a nice guy, but yes the crank needs to be straight and true! I have always used porschedave since then (www.davestriples.com). He is "expensive" but I know it will be perfect when I get it back. Im sure Charlie does a great job too.

Yes. Near the end Damon was showing the signs of Alzheimer's which eventually won the battle. His skills diminished exponentially near the end. He recognized this and was the reason he sold. I give him credit for that. He had the knowledge, but just had a hard time applying it. It made me feel good and sad at the same time when he told me in his lovely southern drawl "you are much better at this than I ever was". What an honor from such a skilled and decent man. I was speechless, which rarely happens

It really was a shame to see Damon go downhill. He built my first crank in 1985 and I lost count how many he rebuilt for me. I would send on Monday, he would get them in and out on Wed and it was back on Friday. Always good work. But the last year he had trouble even talking on the phone, really broke my heart.
