...not my H1 project (a Tony Foale Hub Centre H1), but my 123,000 mile Triumph Tiger, on Historic Route 66 in Illinois - my 50th birthday trip to the States;

Back in England now, unfortunately with rather more titanium in my leg than when I went out there...

The route 66 birthday trip sounds like a lot of fun. The titanium part does not. What happened?

Looks to me like he parked sideways on the frontage road and maybe got smacked. ;) Happy birthday!

That picture is my VERY Favorite of the trip - we rode a little over 4,200 miles in just under 2 weeks.
We set off from my friend's house in Kingsport TN, rode up to Chicago for the start of 66, then onto St. Louis etc etc along 66 (riding the old historic pavement wherever we could) as far as Tucumcari NM.
Then North up through Colorado to Eagle - visited Red Cliff (my Great Great Grandfather founded the town of Red Cliff in 1879, and he was Town Marshall) - very exciting to see the place, his grave in the little cemetery, and the old town hall and jailhouse where he worked (condemned and closed down now, but still there!). We then rode through Denver, through Kansas, back into MO and St. Louis again, then down to Nashville, and back to Kingsport. BOY do I have some amazing photos!!!
We chilled for two days, then on the Fourth of July we went for a ride in Shady Valley, TN. The front wheel bearings collapsed in a VERY tight left hander, I ended up going to the right and into the guard rail (at approx a stratospheric 25MPH). My right foot caught on one of the posts for the Armco, snapped off the footpeg, and turned my foot around 180 degrees facing backwards. This spiral broke my tib and fib, and tore the crap out of the calf muscle and tendons etc. then momentum took me over the rail, snapping the tib and fib again further up (and poking bones through the side of my leg), and shattered my tibial plateau into many pieces.
As I went over the rail I bounced on top of it, breaking 3 ribs and dislocating my collar bone.
Surgery was done at the Bristol Regional Medical Center, Bristol TN. Two weeks there and I was medically escorted and flown home to England.
I have gruesome photos if anyone wants to see them...

Couple of pix in the Rocky Mountains, northern CO....

Very sorry to hear about your accident.
How much repair work does it take to put that kind of mileage on a Tiger?

the bad thing with titanium screws for medical is you can't use them for your bike.
When they put titanium screws after I broke my ankle with my H2A I expected to keep them when they put the screws off my ankle a year later.
The surgeon agreed but when he gave me look like screws for wood (yet in titanium) :(

How much did it end up costing you? I've heard horror stories from one UK guy about huge costs for relatively minor medical problems. Maybe you had insurance coverage?

No idea - it had 116,000 miles when I bought it - I sent my friend in Kingsport TN $2,000 to get me a bike for the trip. He went about 150 miles to NC, and. rode the bike home.
When I got to the States on June 10th, we changed the oil and filter, changed the in-tank fuel filter, plugs and new tyres - it hasn't missed a single beat in the 7,000 miles we have put on it. The bike is indestructible!!!
Best bit was, I live 15 miles from the Triumph factory where the bike was built in 2001..!!..

Thank FECK I had insurance Jim, the total figure for the Paramedics, the Surgery, Hospital Stay, and Medical Flight/Nurse Courier home, was in excess of $300,000.
I would have been forced to sell the family home, and then STILL have been way short of paying that...
Sobering stuff...

What does 73 de aa3dn mean???
